Job Summary

This position is responsible for generating revenue through the proactive origination of residential mortgage loans. The Mortgage Originator facilitates the entire loan process from application to loan closing with the assistance of a mortgage processor. This position prospects and follows up with leads to proactively solicit business. Mortgage Originators will analyze potential borrower’s income, credit and assets to counsel ¬¬¬ on financial products that help meet their individual needs. The MO will be the source of knowledge for portfolio products and contracted products via the secondary market. Residential mortgage products include: first, second, ARM, Land/Lot, home equity and lines of credit. The MO will also cross sell other credit union products which are appropriate and when they benefit the member. 


o Maintain ongoing communication with supervisor, informing him/her of all pertinent problems, irregularities, new developments, changes, and other important information within area of responsibility.

o Cooperate with other department personnel to ensure a "team effort" and prompt member service.

o Adhere to all company policies and procedures.

o Maintain current knowledge of credit union philosophy, plus all credit union services.

o Participate in continuing education as approved by supervisor.  


Principle Duties and Responsibilities?

o Interview loan applicants and assist members with loan application process.

o Build new relationships and keep a consistent source of referral based business from realtors, builders, attorneys, contractors, financial professionals, etc.

o Consistently communicates with members their application status, (approval, denial, additional documentation, etc.), and current interest rates. Responsible for ensuring interest rates are locked in conformity with Pelican State CU policies.

o Collect all member documents for underwriting and assist in obtaining information for timely processing of all mortgage loans. Pull credit reports and verify supporting documentation including, but not limited to, employment history, deposit information and other documentation related to the application.

o Originator will deliver exceptional member service by maintaining a thorough knowledge of lending programs, policies, procedures and regulatory requirements, demonstrating professional ethics, complying with all federal and state compliance policies and adhering to HMDA requirements. Be familiar with all residential programs offered internally and externally.

o Provide all applicable disclosures for both fixed- and variable-rate loans.

o Determine credit worthiness of applicant based on industry standards for collateral/equity value.

o Maintains organized pipeline with weekly updates to Loan Processor. Follows up with member on all outstanding issues.

o Calculate closing costs and provide a loan estimate for closing costs to member.

o Obtain copy of current homeowner’s insurance and flood insurance (if applicable).

o Establish repayment and interest schedule based upon loan guidelines and rates. Mortgage Loan Originator Baton Rouge, LA Full-Time

o Remain up-to-date on changing regulations in the mortgage industry.

o Type and mail approval and denial letters to applicants.

o Cross sell all other PSCU products and services.

o Other duties as assigned, such as processing and servicing.  


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 

o Knowledge of conventional and government (FHA\VA) lending requirements.

o Knowledge of processing/underwriting/closing requirements. o Knowledge of federal and state regulations, and where applicable, governing real estate lending.

o Knowledge of Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.

o Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.

o Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

o Excellent presentation skills.

o Ability to build quality client relationships.

o Must exhibit excellent customer service skills.

o Ability to work effectively as a team player.

o Must be a quick learner and able to transition to Pelican’s Mortgage’s systems.

o Excellent communication, presentation, time management and organization skills.

o Entrepreneurial spirit and competitive drive. o Ability to analyze financial information.

o Proven track record of success in sales.


Training and Experience

o High school diploma or equivalent.

o Must be SAFE Act Compliant and familiar with all related mortgage regulations.

o Currently Licensed Mortgage Loan Originator.

o Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Finance, or related field preferred.

o Minimum 2 years’ experience in mortgage loan origination.
